Persian, otherwise known as Farsi, is the official language of the Islamic Republic of Iran. It is also the nation's schools' medium in teaching literature, the language used in print and broadcasting media, as well as in the regional and other tribal languages. In political context, the name Iran is used, although the country is interchangeably called Iran and Persia.

There are actually many languages popularly used in Iran such as Arabic, Kurdish, Armenian and Azeri. It is directly correlated to Middle and Old Persian, which are the previous languages of the Fars region in Southwestern Iran. Local speakers refer to the modern Persian language as Farsi. The Farsi language is actually written in Arabic characters and contains many Arabic-borrowed words and a broad literature. Belonging to the Iranian branch of the Indo-European family of languages, Persian is still the most widely used language in Iran, People's Democratic Republic of Yemen, Afghanistan, Iraq, Oman, Bahrain, United Arab Emirates and even in large Muslim communities in the United States of America. In Tajikistan and in the Pamir Mountain region however, the ancient form of the Persian language is still widely employed.

There are an estimated total of 56 million people who speaks the Farsi or Persian language, which is about 60% (40 million) of the total population of Iran, 50% (14 million) of Afghanistan population and the remaining 2 million comes from Pakistan.
